The 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season began at Gainesville Raceway for the historic NHRA Gatornationals, where Tasca Racing debuted its new driver and leadership combination with Austin Prock behind the wheel of the PPG Nitro Mustang Dark Horse Funny Car. The event marked the first official race weekend for the newly assembled program led by crew chief Jimmy Prock and driver Austin Prock, beginning a new era for the Tasca Racing Funny Car team.

Challenging Track Conditions Define Friday Qualifying

Friday’s opening qualifying session showed early promise. With difficult track conditions affecting the entire Funny Car field, Prock guided the PPG Nitro Mustang down the track with a 4.836-second run at 217.74 mph after pedaling the car to recover from early tire shake. The effort placed Tasca Racing sixth after the first session.

“The track wasn’t in very good shape,” Prock said after the run. “We had the car way peeled back just trying to go A to B. Only a few cars got down the track. I had to give it a quick pedal, and it recovered really fast, so we’ll take that and look forward to the next run.”

The second qualifying session proved more challenging. Prock left the starting line with a strong 0.073 reaction time and a competitive 0.901-second 60-foot, but the car drove into tire smoke shortly after the launch. Prock lifted early and coasted to a 6.428-second run at 109.76 mph, placing the team 12th heading into Saturday.

Saturday Sessions Bring Final Push for the Field

Saturday presented the final two opportunities for the Tasca Racing team to secure a spot in Sunday’s elimination field. In Q3, Prock left with his best reaction time of the weekend at 0.067 seconds before the car struck the tires roughly 200 feet into the run. After a quick pedal attempt, the safety system shut the engine down, ending the pass early with a 5.493-second run at 156.35 mph.

With one final chance remaining, the team lined up for Q4 in conditions that had been complicated by an oil-down near the starting line earlier in the session. The surface forced teams to adjust their staging position and racing groove. When Prock launched the PPG Nitro Mustang, the car immediately lost traction and spun the tires at the hit, slowing to a 7.562-second pass at 132.74 mph. The run left Tasca Racing just outside the top 16, meaning the team would not qualify for Sunday eliminations.

“It sticks, but sometimes racing goes this way,” Prock said following the final run. “Everything that could go wrong seemed to happen this weekend. It’s a shame for PPG because they’re putting a lot into this program, and they expect us to win. But we will win. When my dad went to Don Schumacher Racing with Jack Beckman, they didn’t qualify at their first race either, and then they won the next three. That’s the plan now.”

Tasca Racing Focuses on Moving Forward in 2026

While the Gatornationals did not deliver the results the team was aiming for, the weekend marked the starting point of a new chapter for Tasca Racing. With Austin Prock behind the wheel and Jimmy Prock calling the shots, the team now shifts its focus to the NHRA Arizona Nationals on March 20th as they continue developing the Nitro Mustang Funny Car program for the 2026 season.
